Overview
The University of Washington, School of Medicine, Division of Cardiology accepts applications for the non-ACGME Complex, High-Risk and Indicated Percutaneous Coronary Interventions and Advanced Hemodynamic Care Fellowship Program (CHIP) from July 1 – October 1 1 each year. This is a full-time (100% FTE) 12-month appointment available July 1 of every year.
Improvements in percutaneous coronary artery technologies and secular trends in the treatment of coronary artery disease have led to the preferential growth in referrals for PCI in hemodynamically unstable and/or anatomically complex patients. Such Complex High-risk and Indicated PCI (CHIP) patients represent a challenging but rewarding field governed by robust data demonstrating that ischemia reduction, irrespective of anatomic or hemodynamic challenges, is a pillar in the effective treatment algorithm of patients with coronary artery disease. However, data has shown that few Interventional Cardiology operators in the US have the skill set to successfully treat this growing group of complex patients.
The CHIP fellow will gain experience in performing PCI for chronic total occlusions (CTO), severely calcified lesions requiring advanced plaque modification techniques, in-stent restenosis, left main disease, bifurcations, and high-risk PCI requiring percutaneous mechanical circulatory support. There will be opportunities to be involved in original research on CTO and other CHIP topics.
The CHIP fellow will become facile and independent performing the whole gamut of CHIP procedures, including CTOs (more than 300 CTO PCIs are performed at UW every year).
UW Medical Center is in the unique position to fulfill this educational need, as one of the few centers in the nation with a high CHIP volume, extensive involvement in cutting edge clinical trials, expert faculty, and program infrastructure to provide this training.
